Salt is an essential nutrient in the food and also play other roles such as adding sodium nutrient, taste, and flavor to food. This is one of the reasons why salt is used in the processing and production of food.
Hence, taking excess salt can lead to health issues such as heart conditions that include diseased vessels, structural problems, blood clots, and hypertension.
Polices have been made by the World Health Organization (WHO) to reduce excessive consumption of salt. Most snacks such as meat-pie, fish roll, egg roll, bread, etc. contain some amount of salt although this may not be known to us.
Therefore we should try to train our taste buds to low salt consumption of homemade food since that’s what we can use to control salt quantities. Most persons like excessive consumption of salt. They tend to enjoy such meals for reasons best known to them.
These sets of persons are advised to train their taste buds to low salt intake.
Economic importance of Salt
Seasoning
Salt has been used for seasoning to enhance food taste. It adds taste to food and snacks, therefore, making it palatable for consumption.
Preservatives
Salt is a traditional method of food preservatives for preserving food, fish, meats, and vegetables before the refrigerator was invented.
This method of food preservation is necessary even after the invention of the refrigerator because it is an important aid to food hygiene.
Color Controller
Salt enhances color in most snacks such as meat-pie, dough, hotdog, bacon, and also processed meat.
Salt gives the bread a color by reducing sugar in the dough thereby leading to the browning of sugar. This gives bread sweet nutty flavor and brown color.
Texture Aid
Salt strengthens gluten (the protein found in wheat product). In bread making gluten is just like a miraculous net that holds bread together without tearing. It helps dough rise and gives bread its unique texture.
Salt develops rind hardness and gives processed meat firm texture.
Fermentation control
Salt reduces the growth of bacteria, yeast, and other microorganisms thereby reducing fermentation. This is important as it reduces the effects of bacteria.
As much as we love salt and it is an important nutrient in food it can also lead to havoc to the body if not taken in the right quantities
It is assumed that salt is a waste product but from research, we found out that it is not entirely a waste product as some of the salt we take is stored in the body.
World Health Organization (WHO) recommend a maximum of 5 gram of salt daily.
Cooked food most times already contains the maximum gram of salt needed for the body therefore snacks and bakery products such as bread tend to be extra consumption of salt.

Some negative effect of salt
Salt can lead to diseases such as high blood pressure, heart disease, damage of organs, etc. if consumed in excess quantities in food and snacks.
Spikes blood pressure
High blood pressure is a condition in which the force of blood against the artery wall is too high.
From research it is known that excess salt affects blood pressure levels. The heart pumps blood to the whole body through the arteries. High blood pressure makes it difficult for the heart to pump blood
Some other factors that cause high blood pressure include obesity, smoking, and old age
Salt is also a major perpetrator of hypertension especially baked or processed food that secretly contains a high sodium level.
Heart Disease
High blood pressure increases the chances of heart disease.
As stated above excessive salt intake especially from processed food spikes blood pressure. Most people don’t know how much salt they consume especially from processed food. People tend to consume above the recommended amount of salt to be taken daily. A diabetic patient is to avoid excessive consumption of salt as it increases the chances of cardiovascular disease (a heart condition that includes disease vessels, structural problems, and blood clot)
Damage to organs
According to research, a diet with a high sodium level can cause damages to some organs in the body such as heart, blood vessels, kidney leading to kidney failure.
High blood and hypertension patients are to avoid salt as much as possible while others are to keep moderate consumption of salt and sodium.
